It's cold. The Charlotte Observer in a front page story Wednesday described N.C. lawmakers recently heightened concern over out-of-state students attending N.C. schools basi cally tuition free. The issue was raised, the story says, by the Polk County Asso ciation of County Taxpayers (ACT). With 40 S.C. students attending Polk County Schools, Polk County had the most out-of-state students of eight border counties surveyed by the Observer staff. ACT has been campaigning to right this travesty of tax payer justice for some time now. It may be that North Car olina will look at South Caro lina, which does charge out-of- state tuition, and ask tit for tat. "The taxpayers are getting ripped off," Walt Hamill, presi dent of ACT, told the Ob server, singing the ACT theme song. Maybe. Maybe not. But it surely would be a shame if we wound up chasing away our neighbors and friends from our schools. Let's hope in their zeal (Continued On Back Page) TRYON, N. C. 28782 Tryon Christmas Parade Dec. 11 The Tryon Volunteer Fire men's Christmas Parade will be Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 4:30 p.m. This year's parade will be led by Grand Marshall Bob Caldwell, weathercastcr and feature reporter for WLOS-13. Mr. Caldwell has been with WLOS since 1966 and is a familiar face to our area. There is still time for anyone - churches, clubs, etc. - to enter a unit in the parade. Cash prizes for non-proiessional floats will be awarded to the first 3 places. Santa's arrival will be the Grand Finale as usual. He will be available after the parade to take those last minute Christ mas requests from the children. (Parents you can find him behind the Fire Dept.) Each year the Firemen dis tribute bags of fruit and candy after the parade and invite everyone to come by and get theirs. DEC. 6.1991 Karen Godlock Fourth-Place Finish Karen Godlock, Polk County track star, is seen crossing the finish line at the Kinney Cross Country South Regional meet held Nov. 30. Godlock finished fourth among the girls, with a time of 18:12.0, just 25.8 seconds off the lead. Godlock will compete in the Kinney national finals in San Diego on Dec. 14. 20 Per t ops Workshop On Sign Ordinance Scheduled The Polk County Board of Commissioners has scheduled a workshop to discuss the details of the proposed sign ordinance. The board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11 at the courthouse annex. All meetings of the full board are open to the public. The board is scheduled to vote on the ordinance Dec. 16. A summary of the Ordinance is inside today's Bulletin. Non-Door Prize From Humane Society Well known anima] artist Nancy Pellatt will donate a drawing of the winner's pet for the lucky drawer of the non door prize to be given at the Foothills Humane Society's Make Believe Ball. Invitations have been mailed for this annual event, which the Society says is "just about the most popular event of the year for us." Anyone who has not received an invitation is urged to phone the Humane Society Shelter today, 863-4444, to receive one and respond in time for the drawing, Saturday, Dec. 14, me date of the Ball. Pellatt's work has been widely exhibited, and was on view recently at the Sporting Arts show at Pine Crest Inn. One of the Society's many volunteers will make the drawing Dec. 14. Community Reporter
